ABOUT THE ANTI-SLIP ROAD PLATE
This heavy-duty steel road plate is designed to temporarily cover suitable excavations and provide continued access for vehicles, plant or pedestrians.
The 2.4 × 1.2-metre plate features a resin-bonded bauxite surface that provides greater grip than a smooth steel plate, particularly in wet or trafficked conditions.
Multiple plates can be installed to cover longer excavations, provided every plate has adequate bearing, support and restraint. Suitable end sections or bituminous ramps may be needed to create a smooth transition and reduce movement and impact noise.
At approximately 450 kg, the plate requires suitable mechanical handling equipment, lifting accessories and a planned installation procedure.
FAQs
What is the road plate used for?
It is used to temporarily cover suitable trenches or excavations and maintain access for specified vehicles, plant or pedestrians.
How much weight can it support?
The supplier lists a rating of up to 100 tonnes under specified conditions. This is not a universal site rating. The allowable load must be calculated from the excavation, ground support, plate span and expected traffic.
What size excavation can it cover?
This cannot be determined from the plate dimensions alone. Adequate bearing is required on every supported edge, and the trench width and loading must be assessed by a competent temporary-works designer.
Is the surface slip-resistant?
Yes. It has a resin-bonded bauxite coating designed to provide a high-friction surface. Contamination, wear, ice, mud and standing water can still reduce grip.
Can pedestrians use it?
It can form part of a temporary pedestrian route if correctly installed. Trip edges, gaps, movement and changes in level must be controlled, with suitable barriers and accessible alternatives where required.
Does it need to be secured?
Yes. Road plates must be restrained against movement. The installation method may involve anchoring, recessing or another engineered solution appropriate to the surface and traffic.
NEED HELP CHOOSING?
Our team is here to help you find the right machine for your project.
Are the corner holes lifting points?
No. The four corner points are for anchoring and must not be assumed to be certified lifting points. Only an approved lifting method and correctly rated accessories should be used.
Can the plate be moved manually?
No. It weighs approximately 450 kg and requires suitable mechanical lifting equipment, a lifting plan and trained personnel.
Does it need ramps or end sections?
It may require suitable end sections, recessed installation or bituminous ramps to provide a safe transition and reduce impact. The solution depends on the road surface and intended users.
Can several plates be installed together?
Yes, provided each plate is properly supported, aligned and secured as part of an engineered arrangement. Gaps and differential movement must be prevented.
Can it be installed on a public road?
Work on a public highway may require permits, approved traffic management and agreement from the relevant highway authority. The contractor remains responsible for obtaining all necessary approvals.
Can Build Compound install the road plate?
Unless installation is specifically included in the quotation, Build Compound supplies and delivers the equipment only. Installation must be completed under a suitable lifting plan and temporary-works design.
What should I do if the plate moves or becomes damaged?
Stop traffic from crossing it, secure the area and contact Build Compound immediately. Do not continue using a displaced, distorted or inadequately supported plate.
